Mill Valley Film Festival MIND THE GAP SUMMIT

Michelle Cameron, Anna Paquin & Cerise Hallam discuss the importance of gender equality in independent film at the Mill Valley Film Festival's MIND THE GAP SUMMIT. Moderated by Chaz Ebert.

Michelle speaks on why female investors matter & how she achieved an 80% female film crew for the production of NANCY — a Sundance award-winning feature film starring Andrea Riseborough, J Smith-Cameron, Steve Buscemi, John Leguizamo & Ann Dowd.

“We need the people with the power who are deciding what stories are told and who tells them to be women as well.”

“Zero fucks. Be brave. Don’t be afraid to share your opinion. Do what you want to do and if you don’t fit the mold then break the mold and be you.”

— Michelle Cameron

Michelle discusses gender equality at the European premiere of her feature film NANCY — in partnership with TimesUp.

“Women are coming together collectively and raising their voices and we are more powerful that way. Change is actually happening. It’s incremental but it is getting better. We have to keep having each other’s backs and women need to keep speaking up.”

John Leguizamo, Michelle Cameron & Steve Buscemi discuss the 80% female & 50% POC crew on the set of NANCY. Moderated by Eddie Huang.

“That’s the other thing you did, it was a very young crew, and you were also giving people a shot at positions that they had not worked at before. There was nobody on that set that didn’t want to be there 1,000%.”

— Steve Buscemi

“The mission behind the film was about us changing the landscape for women in film, so we hired all female departments. On top of that we had an all female producing team and all female financiers.”

“I think we’re starting to tell more diverse stories in independent film, which is great. To me that is the point of storytelling, to share stories that some of us would never normally be exposed to.”
